HORMONAL IMBALANCE
All of the body's life processes are associated with the hormones the endocrine glands pour into the circulatory system. The endocrine glands affect growth, aging, nutrition, metabolism and sex. Without a proper balance the nervous system and body fluids would not work with the body. The hormones excreted by the endocrine glands control the growth and development of the body, including the hair. The glands making up the endocrine system are thyroid, adrenal, parathyroid, thymus, pituitary and sex glands. The Adrenal glands are a source of androgens in both sexes. Androgens are capable of stimulating face and body hair. The pattern of hair distribution can be a clue to whether a woman's hirsutism is due to ethnic background or some hormonal source. Hair on the chest, around the nipples and abdomen, or in the center of the body suggests a possible hormonal cause. A hormonal change may be caused by a temporary situation as in puberty and pregnancy. Another hormonal change occurs during menopause. Menopause is not temporary and the hair growth may continue as the levels of estrogen decrease.
