Microdermabrasion How It Works |
ETHNIC SKIN Dark-skinned individuals are usually of African ancestry, are endowed with melanin-rich skin and have very curly hair. However, others may present with dark, olive, or swarthy skin and wavy or curly hair. Curly hair is the single most important factor contributing to the presence of hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin), pseudofolliculitis (ingrown hairs), and hypertrophic or keloid scars (raised, hard scars) in dark skin. Hyperpigmentation can be post inflammatory or the result of friction. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is one of the after effects of pseudofolliculitis and/or electrolysis treatments. The ingrown hair has irritated and inflamed the skin. In the skin’s weakened state bacteria causes a localized follicular infection. The immune system’s battle to clear the infection darkens the area. Electrolysis treatments can also cause temporary post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Extra melanin is released into the area in an effort to protect the epidermis from trauma. Thus, friction, which can traumatize skin without causing an infection, can also cause hyperpigmentation. Thick, tough curly hair with flat shafts and subsequently sharp edges grows out of soft, dark skin. The hair does not become embedded or ingrown but over time its presence hyperpigments and thickens the skin. Yet, hyperpigmentation is reversible. Electrolysis treatments actually accelerate the skin’s return to normal pigmentation by removing the source of the irritation: the hair. PSEUDOFOLLICULITIS Permanently removing the irritating ingrown hairs with electrolysis is one of the most effective therapies for pseudofolliculitis. Left untreated pseudofolliculitis infections can lead to hypertrophic scars and in severe cases, keloid scars. KELOIDS Dark-skinned individuals, who are predisposed to keloid healing, should be aware of it before seeking electrolysis treatments. A thorough consultation should reveal this condition. Those with a history of keloids or hypertrophic scars can be successfully treated. Professional electrolysis treatments rarely cause the condition to erupt. Nevertheless, careful and precise technique is imperative in the highly susceptible areas of the fold of the neck and the chest/sternum. PROGNOSIS Dark-skinned individuals with pseudofolliculitis and hyperpigmentation reap immediate and long-term benefits from electrolysis treatments. Once treatments begin, they stop irritating and infecting their skin with ineffective and harmful home therapies. Ultimately, consistency and patience with professional electrolysis treatments results in smooth, clear hair-free skin.
